IOUG Collaborate08, Denver Colorado, April 15, 2008 –
At Collaborate 08 in Denver this week, Dolphin Interconnect Solutions, a global leader in high performance, high availability interconnect solutions, demonstrated Dolphin Express interconnect technology supporting Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) utilizing the Reliable Datagram Socket (RDS) protocol. Dolphin has benchmarked Oracle RAC on an HP ProLiant cluster with results showing a quadrupling of performance, both in terms of response time and throughput.
Dolphin is specifically targeting the database applications market with the product line Dolphin Express and has for many years supported different database management systems, including Oracle RAC over TCP and UDP. The additional technology support for RDS is in line with Oracle’s own development and published roadmap. The Dolphin Express software component, SuperSockets, is fully transparent to the application, so Oracle RAC can be run right out of the box with the standard UDP protocol or with RDS through the RDS interface developed by Oracle. Dolphin is currently working on a certification program with Oracle which will allow Oracle to support the solution.
A series of benchmarks were run at the HP Solution Alliance Engineering lab in Cupertino, Calif. for the purpose of showing users of Oracle RAC what performance improvement can be expected in their own systems by using industry-standard HP ProLiant servers and Dolphin Express interconnect.
The benchmark results show a close to 400% performance improvement (both throughput and response time) over gigabit Ethernet when deploying Oracle RAC over RDS on an HP ProLiant cluster with Dolphin Express. The results are primarily due to the unique architecture of Dolphin Express with features that minimize latency and remove protocol overhead. The 400% performance is based on Oracle internal testing tools and does not necessarily mean all applications are able to utilize all improvement features.
“This impressive benchmark further illustrates the power and versatility of the HP ProLiant server family versus competitive platforms, as well as the powerful combination of HP ProLiant servers and a low latency interconnect such as those provided by Dolphin Express,” said Todd Mattershead, group manager of ProLiant Product Development at HP. “As the undisputed market leader in industry-standard servers, HP knows that customers look to HP ProLiant for a standards-based, power-efficient, high-capacity server solution as the cornerstone for an adaptive infrastructure.”
“As part of our strategy to be a leading provider of high performance systems to the enterprise data centers, we are very pleased to collaborate with HP and Oracle to continually serve the HP and Oracle RAC community with the best solutions available,” said Tim Miller, CEO of Dolphin Interconnect Solutions.
